Is Ultrasound Disrupting Inefficiencies in Healthcare?
Are major healthcare institutions exceeding the level of care most patients need? Clayton M. Christensen, MBA, a Professor of Business Administration at the Harvard Business School, seems to think so. He discussed disruptive innovation and how it applies to healthcare in his keynote address, “The Innovator’s Prescription: A Disruptive Solution for Healthcare,” at the CHIME 2011 Fall CIO Forum.
Christensen uses the emergence of ultrasound for clinical applications as an example of a technology “disruptive” to the inefficient standards of
modern healthcare. Compared with other imaging systems, ultrasound is an inexpensive, simpler, more convenient product that ultimately lets low-cost professionals provide sophisticated services in an affordable setting. An article entitled “Healthcare needs to become more disruptive and simple” recently posted on CardiovascularBusiness.com explains:

Ultrasound Guided Fine Needle Aspiration Technology at American Thyroid Association Annual Meeting
Ultrasonix is off to Indian Wells, just outside Palm Springs, California, for the 81st Annual Meeting of the American Thyroid Association taking place October 26-30th. The Annual Meeting will include top-notch educational sessions and programs focusing on thyroid biology and the prevention and treatment of thyroid disorders. To find out more on the event, check out the meeting program or the meeting at a glance.
To learn how ultrasound technology not only assists endocrinologists to diagnose thyroid issues, but also to perform fine needle aspiration biopsies, feel free to watch the following video. Leonard Doberne discusses the large part ultrasound plays at his endocrinology practice in Mountain View California.

Adaptive Compounding Technique Used for Needle Visualization
As ultrasound is being used more and more to assist the guidance of needle insertion in nerve blocks, gaining vascular access, biopsies and therapy procedures, clinicians all deal with the same issue: How to get a clear view of the needle in their ultrasound image? Accurate needle visualization can be difficult due to the small foot print the needle leaves combined with the tissue/speckle pattern that appears around the needle.
Our research team is at the IEEE International Ultrasonix Symposium in Orlando, Florida this week to present a solution for making the needle clearer in ultrasound. Based on their paper, Adaptive Spatial Compounding for Needle Visualization, they proposed an adaptive tensor-analysis based spatial compounding method to enhance the needle visualization. To find our when the full paper will be available for you to ready, please keep following our blog or select "research" as your specialty and subscribe to our news updates.

New Needle Guidance Technology Showcased at American Society of Anesthesiologists' Annual Meeting
Ultrasonix is off to the Windy City for the American Society of Anesthesiologists’ Annual Meeting taking place from October 15-19. The ASA will draw anestheiologists from around the world to experience a wide-ranging educational program in the growing field. The event will include workshops, information sessions, and lectures all focusing on the new trends and concepts in anesthesia. Click here to see the full event schedule.
The ASA Annual Meeting will mark the introduction of the SonixTablet for point of care ultrasound system. Equipped with SonixGPS needle guidance technology, it allows clinicians to clearly predict the needle’s trajectory during invasive procedures such as performing nerve blocks for local anesthesia. Unlike any other technology out there, SonixGPS allows you to locate your target with the transducer and then select a needle direction to determine the safest angle for your patient. See doctor’s reactions to the needle guidance technology in this video below.

Emergency Physicians at ACEP's Scientific Assembly Get First Look at SonixHub Community
Ultrasonix is heading down to foggy San Francisco this weekend to attend the world’s largest and most prestigious gathering of emergency medicine physicians, ACEP’s Scientific Assembly taking place from October 15-18. Over the four days there will be more than 300 educational courses, interactive workshops, and hands on skills labs with an emphasis on the latest trends in Emergency Medicine. See the following link for the course outline. We'll let you know how the show was in the following weeks.
We are especially excited for ACEP because we will be launching our SonixHub Community software platform. The SonixHub software was initially designed to help Emergency Medicine physicians who were learning how to use ultrasound for exams to collect, store, grade and report. Now that ultrasound is being used for a variety of applications, anesthesia departments, reproductive clinics and OB/GYN practices are all able to use SonixHub Community to reduce time, costs, and the amount of paper work associated with ultrasound. And the best part is the software is free for up to 100 users!

Unique Fertility Ultrasound Technology at the American Society for Reproductive Medicine Annual Meeting
At Ultrasonix, we are excited to be taking part in the annual meeting of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine again this year in Orlando, Florida, October 15-19. This year’s show will feature more than twenty post graduate course presentations, including “Ultrasound Imaging in Reproductive Medicine” by members of the Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Women’s Health department at the University of Louisville (Sunday, October 16th). See the following link for more details on the presentations, you will need to fill out a brief registration form to see more details on the abstracts. We will be showcasing the unique benefits SonixTouch and SonixTablet bring to reproductive medicine in island booth #2531, near the entrances.
If you won’t be making it to Florida next week but want to learn how ultrasound technology can improve workflow in a busy and successful fertility clinic, then you will be interested in this short video featuring doctors from the Pacific Fertility Center in San Francisco. And by the way, kudos to the Pacific Fertility Center for running and regularly updating an interesting and informative blog.
